Best area to stay

Karaköy or Sirkeci

Istanbul · Nights 1–4

Both sit on the T1 tram spine with ferry docks at the door, which is exactly what this route runs on: Sultanahmet is one or two tram stops for days one and two, Kabataş and Dolmabahçe minutes up the line for day three, and the Üsküdar ferry leaves from your doorstep on day four. Karaköy adds Beyoğlu's food and nightlife on foot; Sirkeci keeps you inside the old city's evening quiet.

logisticsferriesfoodfirst visitKaraköy's bar lanes run loud past midnight — ask for a room off the alley side. In Sirkeci, quality varies street by street near the station; check recent photos and pick the upper floors.

5Sirkeci & Hocapaşa Sokak

Morning

Everything today sits within ten flat minutes of Sultanahmet square — the discipline is doing less, properly. Be at Hagia Sophia when it opens, before the groups.

1
culture

Hagia Sophia

Fifteen centuries of empire under one impossible dome

Byzantine cathedral, Ottoman imperial mosque, and the building every other dome in the city answers to. Go early, give it real time, and look up long enough for the scale to land — the dome was the largest enclosed space on earth for nearly a thousand years.

Blue Mosque & the Hippodrome

The six-minaret answer to Hagia Sophia, across a garden

Sultan Ahmed's mosque faces Hagia Sophia across the old imperial gardens — inside it's a sky of İznik blue tiles. The long square beside it is the Roman Hippodrome; the Egyptian obelisk and Serpent Column have watched chariot races, riots and coronations from the same spot.

Afternoon

One palace is the whole afternoon — that's not a compromise, it's the point.

3
culture

Topkapı Palace

The Ottoman court's own city of courtyards and treasure

Four courtyards of pavilions, armouries and relics where the empire was actually run for four hundred years. Pick your battles: the Imperial Treasury, the kitchens and the fourth-court terraces over the water are the core; the Harem is worth its separate ticket if your legs agree.

nature

Gülhane Park

The palace gardens, now the old city's exhale

Roll downhill out of Topkapı into what used to be its outer gardens — plane trees, tulip beds in spring, and terraces near the top gate that look over the Bosphorus mouth. Take the pace down with a çay before the evening.

Evening

food

Sirkeci & Hocapaşa Sokak

Dinner in the lokanta lanes below the old station

Five minutes downhill, the streets around Hocapaşa are wall-to-wall lokantas and köfte houses — steam trays, grilled meats, honest prices, zero theatre. This is where the old city actually eats; finish with baklava or a milk pudding from one of the muhallebici counters.

End of day

Four giants and dinner, all within one flat kilometre — the day's only queue strategy is starting early.

Insider tips for Istanbul, Türkiye

  • Buy an Istanbulkart at any machine on arrival and load it generously — the same card runs trams, funiculars, buses AND the city ferries, and every leg of this plan uses one of them.
  • The commuter ferries are the best cruise in town: the Eminönü–Üsküdar run is fifteen minutes of full skyline for pocket change. Sit outside, take the tea the vendor offers — and bring a layer, the strait is always windier than the shore.
  • Mosque rhythm: dress modestly, shoes off, headscarves for women, and expect visitor entry to pause around the five daily prayers — longest on Friday midday. Plan mosque interiors for mid-morning or mid-afternoon and nobody's day is disturbed, including yours.
  • The two palaces are the only bookings that matter: reserve Topkapı and Dolmabahçe ahead, allow for airport-style security lines, and check current visiting days — both keep a weekly closing day.
  • Respect the hills: the water-level lanes climb hard toward Galata and Beyoğlu. The Tünel and Kabataş–Taksim funiculars exist precisely for those two slopes — riding them is the local move, not the lazy one.
  • Eat on the city's clock: lokanta steam trays at lunch, long meze-and-rakı dinners at night. In the bazaars, browsing is free and haggling is theatre with tea. And in old-city traffic, the tram beats a taxi almost every time — when you do take one, insist on the meter or use an app.
