Barcelona · Nights 1–3

The central Eixample puts Day 2 literally outside your door — Casa Batlló and La Pedrera are a stroll, with direct metro lines to the Sagrada Família and Plaça d'Espanya for the other mornings. El Born trades that grid efficiency for medieval lanes and better nightlife on your doorstep; the Gothic day then starts on foot.

Roman Barcino's forum is now the square where the Generalitat faces City Hall. Drift from here without a plan — Carrer del Call, the Roman walls, Plaça Sant Felip Neri's shrapnel-scarred church. Getting slightly lost is the method.

Built by the port neighbourhood in fifty years flat, Santa Maria del Mar is pure, bare Catalan Gothic — many locals' favourite building in the city. El Born's lanes around it are boutique and vermouth territory now.

Ten green minutes from El Born: the over-the-top cascade fountain (a young Gaudí worked on it), rowboats, palms and half the city on blankets. Take the pace down a gear before the waterfront.

Walk the palm-lined Passeig Marítim as the light softens — swimmers, skaters and the W Hotel's sail on the horizon. The old fishermen's grid behind the beach does seafood and bombas the way it always has.

Insider tips for Barcelona, Spain

  • ◎Two bookings make or break this trip: Sagrada Família and Park Güell's monumental zone. Reserve both before you fly — everything else can be decided on the day.
  • ◎One paid Gaudí interior per day is plenty. The facades of La Pedrera and Casa Batlló are free, lit at night, and half the show.
  • ◎Run on the Spanish clock: lunch around 14:00, dinner from 21:00. Kitchens genuinely close in between — plan the gap with vermouth, not hunger.
  • ◎Pickpocketing here is opportunistic, not aggressive: front pockets on the metro and La Rambla, and never leave anything unattended on the sand.
  • ◎Buy a T-casual ten-ride metro card on arrival — this route only needs three rides, but each one replaces a long uphill slog.
  • ◎Barceloneta is an urban beach: brilliant for a walk and a swim, but it's the city's living room, not a secluded cove. Set expectations, bring nothing valuable.
